Clean, secluded, rustic and little-used campsite. It's a bit of a drive off the main road, but makes a really good base camp for exploring the Cheat Mountain area or Otter Creek Wilderness. Definitely check out the Bickle Knob tower a few miles to the east if you go.
the campsite is tucked far back in the forest, with excellent hiking locations within a five minute walk. There is a fresh mountain spring that they have set up, with the best water ever, forget bottled spring water. the mountain top is a great little trail right next to the campgrounds. Town is only about half an hour away, and seneca maybe 45 min. Lots of caves close by! check out otter creek. Park rangers are always freindly, and fellow campers as well (if there are many). If you like to get away from it all, this is the spot.
This is a remote, 8 site campground, that is rustic, but with pit latrine toilets. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring, as well as a post for hanging a lantern. There will be a cinder-style tent pad as well. Some of the sites have awesome stands of rocks that are fun to clamber over and around. It is easy to get to Elkins for anything that you've forgotten. Seneca Rocks is indeed about 45 minutes - and Dolly Sods is around 45min to an hour away. There is a lot of hiking nearby.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of our visit in September of 2013, the two water pumps on the Bear Heaven hilltop are no longer in operation, due to contamination of the water. You'll need to bring all of the water you need onsite with you, as there is no other source.
Amazing rocks, fantastic views
Very secluded and peaceful. It was extremely clean and the scenery is absolutely phenomenal. There are rock faces all throughout the campground and decent hiking trails. Once the sun goes down expect to hear some creepy sounds and creatures sneaking around. If Bigfoot exists it’s definitely here!
